Former residence of Honma Family is located 1.3 km south-southeast of JR Sakata station.
There is Former Abumiya residence about 200 meters west of this spot.

Honma family had been a landowner in Sakata since the late 17th century, and it was said that the family was the richest merchant in Japan.

This residence was built as a lodgement for officials of Edo government by the head of Honma Family in 1768.

Later, it was given to Honma Family, since that, it was used as the main residence of Honma Family.

The residence is combined with architectural styles for both samurai and merchant.
It is said that this style is rare in Japan.
