The castle is 0.7 km south of JR Uwajima terminal station.

A fort was built on the hill in 941.
And a castle was built on the site in 1236.

After that, the castle had been used as a base of this region.

In 1601, a major renovation was done, and current castle was completed.

After the end of feudal Edo Period (1603-1868), many buildings in the site were demolished, but fortunately, the castle tower and Otemon gate were preserved.

But Otemon gate was destroyed by air laids in 1945 in the World War II.

It is a Japanese garden.

Originally, this place was a palace facing the sea built by Date Munetoshi (1635-1709), the 2nd castle lord of Uwajima Domain.

Date Munetada (1792-1889), the 7th castle lord, constructed this Japanese garden in a part of the palace in 1866.

It is not so wide, but there is a large pond and a trail is set up around the pond.
