Uwajima Castle is in the center of Uwajima city located in the southwest part of Ehime Prefecture.

Uwajima is located about 80 km south of Matsuyama city.
The castle is 0.7 km south of JR Uwajima terminal station.

A fort was built on the hill in 941.
And a castle was built on the site in 1236.

After that, the castle had been used as a base of this region.

In 1601, a major renovation was done, and current castle was completed.

After the end of feudal Edo Period (1603-1868), many buildings in the site were demolished, but fortunately, the castle tower and Otemon gate were preserved.

But Otemon gate was destroyed by air laids in 1945 in the World War II.
